| Reviewed by | ndial | Doom 64 is the N64 version of the original Doom (released for the DOS in 1993 by id Software). The game is a 3D first person shooter (FPS) and plays similarly to earlier Doom games, in which the player must advance through 32 levels battling demons, collecting weapons and keys and activating switches to reach the level's exit while surviving deadly ambushes and traps. |

STORY / GAMEPLAY You play the role of an unknown space marine who survived and escaped the horrors of Hell on Mars' two dark moons, Phobos and Deimos. But demons still lingered within the abandoned halls and complexes of Phobos and Deimos and this time a mysterious entity, possessing the ability to resurrect any demon it comes across, recreates an entire demonic horde more powerful than ever before! A group of marines is sent to Mars again to wipe out the new menace, but finally they all die, well, except of you. As the sole survivor of the team, you must fight alone through the entire onslaught premises swarmed by demonic enemies, to keep them from attacking Earth. The objective on each level is to locate the exit room that leads to the next area, marked with an exit sign and / or a special kind of door, while surviving all hazards on the way. The levels are sometimes very complex and feature plenty of items such as additional ammo and health. The development of Doom 64 started in late 1994 by Midway Games under the supervision of id Software, and some gameplay elements were altered. More on that, all the weapons from the original Doom series are present but redrawn with new details. Due to Nintendo 64's hardware limitations (compared to a PC), the game lacks multiplayer mode.
GRAPHICS / SOUND Doom 64 is great and followed the success of the original DOS Doom. A common gameplay downside of the series is the inability to look up and down (crouch and jump), but still, the game is fun to play! The game's engine is impressive for its time and the visuals are fairly good with a really spooky atmosphere. The full 3D maze (and outdoor settings at times) have pretty detailed textures and the characters are really something. Note that the N64 version has been redrawn with the use of several new characters and textures (i.e. the chainsaw has two blades instead of one, fists wear bloodstained gloves instead of brass knuckles etc). The sound is equally impressive, following the original's atmosphere and quality with an ambient horror style echo and a variety of high quality sound effects. | |
